Today, young mothers from Mombasa took part in a public participation forum on the Mombasa County Childcare Facilities Bill, 2026, held at Changamwe Social Hall. The forum provided an important platform for residents and stakeholders to contribute their views and recommendations toward the development of legislation aimed at improving childcare services across the county.
As part of our participation, we submitted a memorandum advocating for childcare services that are accessible, affordable, safe, and of high quality. We emphasized that childcare is not only a matter of child welfare but also a critical social and economic issue that directly affects the lives and opportunities of young mothers and families.
During the discussions, we highlighted the importance of recognizing, reducing, and redistributing unpaid care work, which continues to be disproportionately shouldered by women and girls, particularly young mothers. The significant time and effort devoted to caregiving often limit opportunities for education, employment, entrepreneurship, and personal development.
We called for the establishment of childcare solutions that respond to the realities faced by young mothers while ensuring that children receive the care, protection, and developmental support they need during their formative years. Quality childcare services can create an enabling environment where children thrive and caregivers are empowered to participate fully in social and economic life.
The proposed bill presents a valuable opportunity for Mombasa County to strengthen support systems for families by creating a framework that promotes safe childcare facilities, professional standards, and greater access to services for all residents. Such measures can contribute to improved child development outcomes while advancing gender equality and economic inclusion.
For many young mothers, access to reliable childcare is a key factor in returning to school, securing employment, starting businesses, or pursuing vocational training. Investing in childcare therefore represents an investment in both children’s futures and the economic empowerment of women.
Our participation in this process reflects our continued commitment to amplifying the voices of young mothers and advocating for policies that address their needs and aspirations. We believe that meaningful public participation is essential in shaping legislation that is inclusive, responsive, and effective.
As the Mombasa County Childcare Facilities Bill, 2026 progresses through the legislative process, we remain hopeful that the views and recommendations shared by community members will contribute to a stronger and more inclusive childcare system.
