The significant rise in gender-based violence cases within Mombasa is arlarming. As our continued measure to curb this, we conducted an impactful community dialogue in Kwa Punda, Jomvu Sub-County, bringing together women at risk, community leaders, and other key stakeholders to strengthen awareness of gender-based violence (GBV) prevention, women’s rights, safeguarding, and access to protection and justice services for survivors.
The dialogue provided a safe and interactive platform for community members to share their views, experiences, and perspectives on the challenges facing women and girls in their communities. Through open discussions and an engaging question-and-answer session, participants explored the different forms of gender-based violence, the importance of early reporting, and the need to protect survivors’ dignity, privacy, and confidentiality.
The discussions emphasised that addressing GBV requires more than awareness; it calls for collective action, accountability, and a commitment to creating communities where violence is not tolerated. Participants reflected on the important role that individuals, families, community leaders, and other stakeholders can play in identifying risks, preventing abuse, and supporting survivors without discrimination or judgement.
A key focus of the dialogue was improving community awareness of available protection, psychosocial support, and justice services. Participants were encouraged to understand where and how survivors can seek assistance, report cases safely, and access the support they need. The session also highlighted the importance of challenging harmful social norms, speaking out against abuse, and promoting respect for the rights and dignity of every woman and girl.
The engagement reinforced the understanding that preventing gender-based violence is a shared responsibility. Building safer communities requires active collaboration among community members, local leadership, service providers, and organisations working to protect women and girls. Creating spaces for open conversation is an important step towards breaking the silence surrounding GBV, addressing misconceptions, and encouraging communities to take a stand against all forms of violence.
Through initiatives such as this community dialogue, Mombasa Young Mothers continues to promote awareness, strengthen community responsibility, and advocate for safe, inclusive, and supportive environments where women and girls can exercise their rights and access essential services without fear.
As the dialogue concluded, the message remained clear: ending gender-based violence starts with awareness, collective responsibility, and action. By working together, we can break the silence, protect survivors, uphold women’s rights, and build communities where every woman and girl feels safe, respected, and empowered.
Together, let us stand against gender-based violence and build a future free from violence, discrimination, and fear.
