On Friday, October 23rd, our team gathered alongside partners, community champions and young leaders at the Reef Hotel in Nyali to mark a defining milestone: the celebration and closeout of the five year Leave No Youth Behind (LNYB) program (2022–2026). Spearheaded by SOS Children’s Villages Kenya, this transformative journey centered on young care leavers young people transitioning out of alternative care into independent adulthood. For Mombasa Young Mothers, this space reaffirmed what we witness every day when young women and care leavers receive genuine support, they do not just navigate life; they lead, build businesses and redefine their futures.
Throughout the five years, our contribution focused on the intersection of youth empowerment, motherhood and economic independence. Through initiatives like Vijana na Skills and Vijana na Bizoo, care experienced young mothers mastered vocational crafts, earned formal certifications, honed business pitching skills and stepped into dignified livelihoods. At the Reef Hotel, that progress was on full display. Care leavers commanded the room presenting viable enterprise ideas, sharing poignant stories of overcoming adversity and holding direct, constructive dialogues with county officials and civil society leaders.
The celebration was not an endpoint, but a springboard for what comes next. Alongside fellow grassroots partners including KESCA, Vybes Art Kenya, Young Champions of Change, Mombasa Youth Assembly, Jomvu Kuza Vijana and Kadzandani Creatives we reflected on the policy ground gained under the Children Act 2022 and Kenya’s National Care Reform Strategy. Looking ahead to the next phase, our collaborative focus expands to primary caregivers, Community Health Promoters (CHPs) and private sector employers to turn training into sustainable, long-term employment. We remain proud to stand with every young person striving to ensure no youth is left behind.
