Mombasa Young Mothers recently took part in a significant two-day review of Kenya’s National Policy on Gender and Development. The engagement was represented by our Executive Director and brought together a diverse range of stakeholders under the leadership of the State Department for Gender Affairs and Affirmative Action.

The review convened government agencies, civil society organizations, development partners, and other key stakeholders to assess the current policy framework and identify areas that require strengthening to address emerging gender-related challenges in Kenya.

This policy review presents a valuable opportunity to reinforce the country’s commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment. Discussions focused on critical issues affecting women and girls today, including unpaid care and domestic work, technology-facilitated gender-based violence, economic empowerment, climate justice, and the promotion of women’s leadership and participation in decision-making processes.

As an organization dedicated to supporting young mothers and adolescent girls, we highlighted the urgent need for policies that recognize, reduce, and redistribute unpaid care and domestic work. Many young women and mothers carry a disproportionate burden of caregiving responsibilities, often limiting their access to education, employment, and economic opportunities. Addressing these challenges through responsive policies can create pathways for greater social and economic inclusion.

We also emphasized the importance of strengthening access to education, expanding economic opportunities, and enhancing social protection systems that enable young mothers and adolescent girls to thrive. These interventions are essential for ensuring that no young woman is left behind in Kenya’s development journey.

The review process demonstrates the value of inclusive dialogue and collaboration in shaping policies that reflect the realities and aspirations of all citizens. By bringing together voices from different sectors, Kenya is taking important steps toward developing a more responsive and equitable gender policy framework.
